Logistics problems are often described as operational problems.

A delivery cannot be created. A route is selected incorrectly. A warehouse does not receive the expected product data. A carrier interface rejects a message. A material cannot be used in a particular plant. A unit of measure is interpreted differently by two systems.

The logistics problem is larger than master data quality
Poor master data is an obvious logistics risk.
A material may have an incorrect weight. A customer may have the wrong delivery priority. A supplier may be missing purchasing-organisation data. A product may lack warehouse attributes. Units of measure may not be converted consistently.
However, correcting individual records does not solve the whole problem.
The organisation must also understand:
- which systems use each attribute;
- which rules depend on it;
- where the value originates;
- how it is transformed;
- who owns it;
- which exceptions have been approved;
- which reports and interfaces consume it;
- which migration objects must provide it;
- what happens when its definition changes.

A practical example: changing shipping conditions
Consider an organisation that wants to change how shipping conditions are assigned to customers.
At first, this may appear to be a relatively small master-data change.
The project identifies several customer groups that should move from a standard shipping condition to an expedited one.
A spreadsheet is prepared with the affected customers. A ticket is created. The customer master records are updated.
A few days later, the team begins to see unexpected effects:
- different routes are selected;
- deliveries receive different scheduling results;

The supplied material dataset covers 96% of required attributes. Twelve warehouse attributes are missing, four units of measure are unmapped, and two high-impact fields still lack approved ownership.

What Martenweave should not become
The logistics use case can easily pull the product in the wrong direction.
Martenweave should not become:
- a warehouse-management system;
- a transport optimiser;
- a control tower;
- an inventory-planning application;
- a carrier portal;
- an EDI runtime;
- an SAP configuration replacement;
- a generic process-mining platform;
- a direct master-data maintenance tool.
Those categories already contain large specialised products.
Trying to compete with them would weaken Martenweave.
Its defensible role is the model and evidence layer behind logistics change.
It should answer:
- What does this logistics attribute mean?
- Where does it originate?
- Which systems use it?
- Which rules validate it?
- Which dataset gaps exist?
- Who owns the decision?
- What will be affected if it changes?
- What evidence justifies the proposed modification?
Why this matters
Logistics processes appear transactional, but their reliability depends heavily on stable definitions.
Products, locations, suppliers, customers, packaging, units, routes and organisational structures must mean the same thing across systems and teams.
When that meaning is distributed across spreadsheets and individual experience, every transformation or integration project must reconstruct it.
