The process may be well designed. The SAP configuration may be correct. The interface may be technically sound. The warehouse may be ready. Yet the operation still fails because the data model behind the process is fragmented.

Imagine that a business decides to change the shipping condition for a group of customers.
The request looks simple.

Technically, the update may be correct.
But the shipping condition does not live in isolation.
It may influence route determination, scheduling, delivery processing, transportation planning, reporting and external integrations.

Each team sees only its own part.

The integration team sees the message field.
The 3PL sees an external code.
The reporting team sees a category.
The project manager sees one change request.
Nobody sees the entire chain.
A model registry should make that chain visible before the update is applied.
It should show that the shipping condition is connected to:
- customer data;
- route-related rules;
- sales and delivery processes;
- outbound interfaces;
- country-specific exceptions;
- reports;
- migration mappings;
- and approved business decisions.
The application does not decide whether the change is correct.

Migration is the most obvious use case
The clearest application is SAP migration.
Migration teams usually work with large mapping spreadsheets. Those spreadsheets often become the closest thing the project has to a data model.
But a spreadsheet is good at showing rows and columns. It is much weaker at showing relationships.
A field may look complete because it has a source, a target and a transformation rule.
What the spreadsheet may not show is that:
- the source column is no longer present in the latest extract;
- the field is mandatory only for one plant;
- the transformation depends on another attribute;
- a business exception was approved in a ticket;
- an interface uses the same target value;
- a downstream report assumes a different interpretation.

Warehouse rollouts need the same discipline
Warehouse programmes often focus on configuration, process design and testing.
But the rollout usually depends on data that comes from several domains:
- product master;
- plant data;
- storage data;
- units of measure;
- packaging;
- handling units;
- batches;
- serial numbers;
- dangerous goods;
- classification;
- warehouse process attributes.
The difficulty is not only whether these fields exist.
The difficulty is whether they are defined consistently across ERP, EWM, legacy warehouse systems and local operational templates.
A field called “packaging type” may mean one thing in the source system and another in the warehouse template.
A unit conversion may technically exist but still be unsuitable for warehouse execution.
A batch requirement may be applied globally while one site uses a local exception.
These are model problems.

This matters because most integration failures are not purely technical.
The message may be valid XML.
The API may return HTTP 200.
The wrong business meaning may still be sent.

Supplier data is usually distributed across central and organisational levels.
One purchasing organisation requires a field that another does not.
One country has a tax or registration requirement.
