Martenweave Alongside SAP Datasphere, SAP Business Data Cloud, and SAP LeanIX

SAP programmes can collect architecture information in LeanIX, semantic and analytic models in Datasphere, governed operational master data in MDG, and transformation evidence in project workbooks. The fact that each system contains “model” information does not mean they serve the same decision.

This article separates three adjacent SAP ecosystem tools from a delivery model registry.

SAP Datasphere and SAP Business Data Cloud

SAP describes Datasphere as a component of SAP Business Data Cloud that connects SAP and third-party data, preserves business context, supports integration, cataloguing, semantic modeling, data products, warehousing, and virtualization. SAP describes Business Data Cloud as a managed SaaS offering that brings together Datasphere, Analytics Cloud, SAP Databricks, and SAP BW for business data fabric, planning, engineering, analytics, and AI use cases.

Those are broad data-and-analytics capabilities. A team should choose them for governed data access, semantic and analytical modelling, data products, integration patterns, or a managed SAP data-cloud architecture. Martenweave does not replace a warehouse, data fabric, semantic analytics layer, or data-product platform.

Martenweave can be useful where a migration or MDM team needs to retain the design evidence behind a field, mapping, rule, exception, or change. A Datasphere model may show how data is shaped for consumption. The delivery registry records the project’s canonical object relationships and review history: the source field, target endpoint, business attribute, evidence gap, proposal, and approval boundary.

SAP LeanIX

SAP LeanIX is enterprise architecture management. SAP documents inventory, reports, diagrams, discovery integrations, reference catalogues, architecture and roadmap planning, and architecture decisions. It is the right category for application portfolios, technology risk, roadmaps, business capability maps, and the relationships that guide enterprise transformation.

Martenweave is not an enterprise architecture repository. It lacks LeanIX’s portfolio and roadmap capabilities. Conversely, a LeanIX application fact sheet is not normally the detailed, versioned source-to-target model that a migration team needs to validate against a dataset.

The complement is practical: LeanIX can explain which applications and interfaces are in scope; Martenweave can make the model slice within that transformation inspectable and reviewable.

How to draw the boundary

For an S/4HANA programme, use the implementation platform for its own function. Use Datasphere or Business Data Cloud to model and distribute analytics-ready data. Use LeanIX to govern the enterprise architecture and roadmaps. Use MDG or another MDM platform to govern live master records. Use Martenweave only where a canonical evidence layer helps delivery teams validate mappings, assess impact, retain decisions, and control proposed model changes.

Do not create a competing enterprise semantic model in every tool. Define the decision each repository owns, link through stable identifiers where that is useful, and retain the authoritative record where people expect to find it.

Decision framework

If the main unit of work is an analytical data product or business semantic view, evaluate Datasphere and Business Data Cloud. If it is an application portfolio or transformation roadmap, evaluate LeanIX. If it is a field-level migration or MDM decision that must survive review, evidence, and change, evaluate Martenweave as a complementary registry.
