Martenweave vs OpenMetadata and DataHub: Open Source Does Not Mean the Same Scope

OpenMetadata and DataHub are open-source metadata platforms and data catalogues. Martenweave is an Apache-licensed, backend-first registry for canonical model knowledge and controlled delivery change. The shared preference for inspectable technology is useful, but it is not a product category.
What the metadata platforms do well
DataHub describes itself as a modern data catalog for metadata management, discovery, governance, lineage, profiling, and data contracts. OpenMetadata describes a unified platform for discovery, observability, governance, quality, lineage, and collaboration. Both are designed to ingest metadata from a changing data ecosystem and help users explore technical assets across it.
That makes them strong options when the programme needs searchable warehouse, pipeline, dashboard, topic, and data-product metadata; broad lineage; ownership; policies; and operational metadata management. OpenMetadata’s documented lineage view, for example, reaches across databases, pipelines, dashboards, services, domains, and data products. DataHub provides a large metadata model, integrations, APIs, and self-hosted or cloud paths.
Martenweave cannot substitute for that breadth. It does not claim automated estate-wide ingestion, catalog UI parity, platform RBAC, data observability, or a general metadata graph for every analytics asset.
What a migration model adds
A migration model often starts from a more constrained but more difficult question: whether the meaning of an attribute survives a move between systems.
For a supplier bank detail, a team may need to distinguish the business attribute from its legacy field, its SAP field endpoint, its company-code context, its permitted values, its mapping, its test evidence, and the decision that accepted a local exception. A technical lineage graph can show movement between tables. It cannot, by itself, establish which mapping rule was approved, whether the SAP context is valid, or whether an AI suggestion may alter canonical model truth.
Martenweave stores those delivery objects in canonical files. Its validators check identifiers, object types, cross-object references, and supported SAP context rules. Dataset profiling and gap analysis can expose missing expected columns; lineage and impact services then work from the same model. AI-assisted changes are represented as PatchProposals for human review rather than direct edits.
Direct alternative, adjacent tool, or complement?
OpenMetadata and DataHub are direct alternatives only if the team’s intended “model registry” is really a metadata catalogue. They are adjacent tools when the goal is field-level delivery evidence, deterministic model validation, and proposal-based change control. They are complementary when an organisation wants both a broad metadata system and a bounded canonical model for a transformation programme.
A sensible boundary is:
- OpenMetadata or DataHub: discover, inventory, enrich, and govern the wider data estate;
- Martenweave: capture the specific model slice, migration assumptions, gaps, mappings, decisions, and controlled changes that delivery teams must preserve.
Do not replicate every table and dashboard into Martenweave. Do not expect a metadata platform to become the sole authority for every model decision without designing the required governance workflow.
How to choose
Start with OpenMetadata or DataHub when the priority is a platform for metadata ingestion, discovery, ownership, data contracts, observability, and lineage across the data estate.
Start with Martenweave when the priority is an inspectable, Git-friendly model repository for a bounded SAP migration, MDM, governance, or AMS workflow. Its advantage is adaptability: teams can extend object models, validation rules, examples, and domain packs in source control, subject to their own review standards.
Choose both when catalogued technical context and controlled delivery semantics must meet. Begin with a small link convention and export boundary rather than promising a bidirectional sync that neither product currently provides out of the box.
